Ryan was one of the most heralded players to come from Oak Ridge High School and helped lead the Trojans to the Division II California State Championship in 2005. In the opening round playoff game, Ryan scored 50 points while playing against Colin Kaepernick, the future NFL quarterback of the San Franciso 49ers.  Kaepernick scored 34 points in a losing effort.

He then attended the University of California where he started both seasons he was there. He averaged 19 points and nine rebounds per game. He went on to be named Second Team All-America and earned First Team All-Pac-10 honors as a sophomore in 2007–08. He led the Pac-10 in scoring, averaging 21 points (ranked 18th in nation) and ranked third in rebounding, pulling down 10 rebounds per game.  

 

After foregoing his final two seasons at Cal, Ryan was drafted in the first round (21st overall) of the NBA Draft by the New Jersey Nets in 2008. He went to have a very successful professional career.  

 

After being traded to Orlando in 2009, he started to make a name for himself as a three-point sharp-shooter. He played with the Magic from 2009 to 2012 and was named the NBA’s Most Improved Player.  In 2011, he led the NBA in both three-point field goals made and attempted, while ranking seventh in free throw percentage, tied for 27th in three-point field goal percentage, ranking 29th in rebounding and 33rd in scoring.

 

Ryan had his best years while playing for New Orleans where he averaged 18 points and six rebounds per game. In 2013, he scored a career high of 36 points in a triple-overtime win over the Chicago Bulls. Two seasons later, he scored over 30 points on two other occasions.  He matched his career high of 36 against his hometown team, the Sacramento Kings, where he set a Pelicans franchise record of scoring 30 first half points.
