Rob attended Valley High School where he was a tremendous quarterback. After receiving a scholarship to Nevada, he spent one year there before returning home to play at Sacramento City College. It was there he was converted into a Tight End. The move was a huge success. He then finished his collegiate career at San Diego State where in his senior season he had 45 receptions for 541 yards.
The St. Louis Cardinals selected Rob in the 3rd round of the 1987 NFL Draft. He became a starter midway through his rookie year having a great season. He had nine receptions in each of the first two games, tying a franchise single-game record held by Jackie Smith. He finished with 42 receptions which was good for second among NFC tight ends. He had 526 receiving yards and six receiving touchdowns. He was voted rookie of the year by the UPI and Sporting News.
After spending time with Dallas and Denver, he joined Buffalo in 1992 and appeared in Super Bowl XXVIII.
