Rick grew up in Fair Oaks and attended Del Campo High School where he was an All- City selection before playing professionally for 11 years in Major League Baseball and in Japan in the NPB. After signing with Philadelphia in 1984, he shortly replaced Hall of Fame third baseman Mike Schmidt who moved to first base. Schu played four seasons with the Phillies along with stints with Orioles, Tigers and Angels.
After his playing days he continued in the Majors as a very successful hitting coach. He had four seasons with Arizona before joining longtime friend and manager Dusty Baker as hitting coach with the Washington Nationals. After Baker’s departure, Rick went to the Giants for two seasons in 2018 and 2019.
He spent a total of 22 years in Major League Baseball as both a player and coach while being recognized as one of the hitting instructors in the game.
