Congratulations to our
2020 Special Olympics Inductee:
JONATHAN SPARKS
Jonathan has been involved with Special Olympics for over 40 years; competing in Swimming, Track & Field, and Golf. Along with numerous medals and impressive accomplishments earned in competition, his role with Special Olympics Northern California as an organization has continued to grow. He served as a Torch Bearer during the 2015 Special Olympics World Games celebration: a very elite distinction given to only 10 Special Olympics athletes world-wide. This required him to run miles every day with the torch and give speeches on his route to Los Angeles. Jonathan was also the Opening Ceremony emcee for the Summer Games in 2012 & 2013, and WinterFest in 2014.
He has dedicated his time as a volunteer to support his fellow athletes, including serving on the Sacramento Polar Plunge Committee and raising thousands of dollars each year. He was nominated for the Volunteer of the Year Award in 2014. He currently volunteers his time at the SONC office in Sacramento as well as the Sacramento Food Bank.
Jonathan’s many talents also include singing and public speaking. He has performed the National Anthem at numerous SONC events and has been promoting Special Olympics through speaking engagements for more than a decade. Jonathan is a certified SONC Global Messenger who has spoken at conferences, businesses, media events, community functions; and annually advocates for Special Olympics at the California State Capitol.
Everyone knows Jonathan for his infectious smile and a great laugh. He is always so positive and encouraging to others, and is proud to represent Special Olympics to everyone he meets. Jonathan is an outstanding human being who is always helpful and supportive to his teammates, coaches, friends and community.
